Did you know that Philadelphia has about 2.9 million trees according to the U.S. Forest Service? Have you connected with the trees in your neighborhood? Are you on a first name basis with any? Do you think of them as friends?

Join our guide Miriam Fisher Schaefer, a graduate of the Barnes Foundation Horticultural Program, and get to know some of the lush and lovely trees in Rittenhouse Square. This is the first of three related seasonal tree-focused walks in the Square.

This isn’t a walk to learn the names of all the trees. You can carry that information around with you in the excellent “Philadelphia Trees: A Field Guide….” by Barnard, Meyer & Briger. At the end of this walk, however, you may be able to recognize some trees by their touch or smell, or by their bark, their buds and their branching, not just their leaves. And you just might have found a tree that you consider a good friend.

Meet at the Billy Goat statue in the southwest corner of Rittenhouse Square.

This is a light rain or shine tour, although it will be cancelled if there are severe storms.

Event Cost: FitC Members: $11.00; FitC Guests $15.00. Payment due May 12th; refunds available until May 14th, 2022. FitC Members only for first 48 hours.
