We know that your taste and smell are important to you. And, we know you have been hearing a great deal about taste and smell over the last four years. During this this event, Monell scientist Pamela Dalton will present recent biomedical research with demonstrations from the Monell Center, the only independent research institute dedicated to understanding taste and smell, the "chemical senses." Following Dr. Dalton’s presentation will be a special viewing of video footage featuring several Monell scientists that is part of educational materials accompanying the new IMAX feature film Super Human Body: World of Medical Marvels. Your visit will conclude with a coffee hour reception hosted by the Mainland Lab and featuring a special taste demonstration.
Pamela Dalton, Member. Dr. Pamela Dalton is a cognitive psychologist with expertise i n chemosensory science, epidemiology and public health. For over
28 years, she has conducted research on human sensitivity to odor. Her research has been applied in numerous settings, including epidemiological investigations of individuals who have experienced acute toxic exposures to volatile chemicals (World Trade Center workers) and studies of chronic occupational exposure to both hazardous and non-hazardous odors. She is an expert in smell testing, having helped to create the NIH toolboxTm which is the gold standard in smell testing and has most recently developed a very sensitive, specific and efficient smell screening test, Scentinel™.
Chris Maute, Lab Manager/Science Communicator. In addition to serving as the Laboratory Manager for the Dalton Lab, as Monell’s Multimedia Communications Manager, Chris creates science content that creatively communicates high-quality research/projects to the public. Chris also lectures at local universities, has co-authored 10+ peer-reviewed journal articles on the topic of Psychology of Olfaction, and is the recipient of 2 Fellowship Grants.
Joel Mainland, Member. Dr. Mainland is a neuroscientist with a focus on
olfaction. The Mainland lab combines sophisticated work in olfactory perception with state-of-the-art technology towards a big scientific aim – digitizing odors. Towards that end, Dr. Mainland recently co-published a groundbreaking paper describing how AI is being used to help predict odors with nearly as much accuracy as the human nose. Thanks to Dr. Mainland’s work, we’re in sight of a future where smells, just like sounds and images, can be shared instantly in a digital format.
