Location: BOK Building, 821 Dudley Street Visitor Entrance, located in the middle of Dudley Street (up the steps, you will enter through 2 doors).
Darlene, who lives near the BOK building (formerly a vocational High School) has volunteered to guide us, based on her use of, and knowledge of the building. See this video about BOK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jdgWvStgFw
Who: 10 FitC members
Event Cost: $16 ($15 for pre-paid tour of the recycled glass making shop + $1 FitC fee). No refunds after April 29 ($2.00 charge for refunds).
9:30 AM - 9:50 AM. Enter on the Dudley Street side. This is the time to get a coffee or tea from TwoPersons Coffee or get in line to buy freshly make baked goods before they sell out (pastries and bread) at the Machine Shop Bakery.
10AM. PRE-PAID REMARK GLASS TOUR. From our gathering point, just to the right of TwoPersons Coffee, we will walk to the basement for our pre-paid tour of Remark Glass, where we will learn about how they “repurpose” the glass bottles and jars that are donated. We will watch the glass blowers at work.
You can order products online in advance and pick them up. https://remarkglass.com/
10:30AM-11:30AM Brunch together at Miles Café. Each of us will order (and pay) for our food at the counter before sitting at our reserved table. Payment by credit card or cash. https://www.milestable.com/bok-philadelphia-brunch-lunch/
From there Darlene will take us to some of her favorite places in the building, starting with Second Daughter Bakery on the 4th floor, known for their brownies, so leave some room for dessert.
Some shops are open for purchases. Some you may want to revisit at a future time for a creative event or activity. https://www.buildingbok.com/
Directions:The Visitor’s Entrance is located in the middle of Dudley Street (south side of the building). You will go up about 5 steps, with railings, and enter through double doors. There is a bicycle repair shop in the center, TwoPersons Coffee and the Machine Shop bakery to the left and Miles Café to the right. I will be there in the center near TwoPersons Coffee with FitC name tags.
Accessibility Issues: For those with mobility issues, there is a ramp near the northeast corner of Mifflin (9th & Mifflin) next to the loading dock. Please contact Darlene in advance of the visit to coordinate finding the group.
Once inside the building, there are elevators.
Since there is 2 hour limited street parking on some blocks (it is a rowhouse neighborhood) and no parking garages, I recommend you come by subway, bus, cab, Lyft/Uber, or bike.
Closest subway station:Tasker-Morris Station - Broad Street Line.
Nearby bus routes: 45, 47, 79 (Check SEPTA). The SEPTA 45 bus has been more reliable than the 47, so Darlene suggests boarding the SEPTA 45 bus near where it starts on 12th & Arch under the Convention Center overhead where you can perch while waiting, then getting off at 12th and Mifflin and walking east 4 blocks to 9th Street, although sometimes it detours to Broad Street.
There is plenty of bike parking available, along with an Indego Bike Share Station onsite!
