"FitC organizer Darlene is looking for 6 adventurous foodies to join her to share a Khmer meal. She says “this food is new to me, so I cannot assure you that you will love it, but I see it as a learning experience. In the past, when FitC members came here, they ordered off the menu. Now is our chance to try a variety of their specialties.”
Khmer refers to the main ethnic group and official language of Cambodia. It is also an adjective for Cambodian culture, such as Khmer cuisine. The Khmer Empire flourished on the rich and fertile mountains, lakes, and plains of Cambodia for 629 years. During this time the kings of Angkor sustained an empire. Cambodian cuisine can be described as a mix of influences from other countries, but it is unique in its bold notes of saltiness, bitterness, acidity, and pungency. Key ingredients you’ll find in a Cambodian kitchen include: fish sauce, palm sugar, coconut milk, and prohok (fermented fish paste), which gives dishes a strong umami flavor. Sharing meals is very important in Cambodian community and this is what we will do.
We will sit at a round table with a Lazy Susan, which makes it easy for us to share Spring Rolls, Papaya Salad and 5 Khmer dishes. The dishes are Fish Chhain Chhoun, Brakok Ktis, Fried Shrimp, Fish with Tamarind Sauce, Somlor Kir Ko, and Beef Somlor Machou Kroeung. Portions are large. Bring cash for your own purchase of coffee or other beverages or dessert.
