Join FitC volunteer Bob Schmidt for an excursion by train to
delightful Doylestown in Bucks County and a visit to the unique Mercer Museum. Created in the early 20th century by historian and archaeologist Henry Mercer, the 6-story Mercer Museum is a concrete castle-like structure that is home to Mercer’s vast collection of handmade objects created in pre-industrial America
.
We will explore the collection on a self-guided tour. After our visit, we will stop
for lunch at one of Doylestown’s nearby restaurants before returning home by
train.
Event Limit: 12 FitC members.
Event fee: $18 ($17.00 plus $1.00 FitC Fee). The deadline for refunds is May 21 (less $2 FitC Refund Fee).
Accessibility: The walk to and from the Doylestown SEPTA station and the Mercer Museum takes about 10 minutes on mostly flat ground. The first floor of the Museum is modern and fully accessible, featuring a shop and restrooms. The castle portion of the Museum has an elevator and offers partial accessibility due to narrow passageways and is not climate controlled. Participants on previous FitC tours of the Museum had no difficulty navigating the exhibits.
Transportation: We will gather at Suburban Station in time to board the
scheduled 9:17 AM Lansdale-Doylestown Regional Rail train #7504, which will
take us to Doylestown. Train fare is free with SEPTA Senior card.
Note: there are no restrooms on the train. The Mercer Museum is a short distance from the station. SEPTA trains return from Doylestown to Center City at 11 minutes past the hour until 4:11 PM, and at 5 past the hour thereafter.
Lunch options: The Stationhouse Pub is directly adjacent to the SEPTA station, but there are other choices, and the tour organizer will provide information.
Rain date: the excursion will go rain or shine.
