Join us for From Nature to Nylons: A Touch-Based History of Textiles at the Science History Institute Museum and Library

This touch-based tour combines a personally-guided exploration of select gallery exhibits and a hands-on study of objects from the museum’s collections led by museum educator, Laura Prewitt.

Our tour of From Nature to Nylons will begin with an introduction to natural fibers, such as wool and linen, and move on to the development of plastics and synthetic materials like nylon and Gore-Tex. We will leave with a better understanding of how these fibers changed our world, and how the changing world influenced the desire for advanced high-tech textiles. Visitors will make three gallery stops on the first floor of the museum. Seating will be available at each stop.

Event Cost: $6 ($5 tour plus $1 for FitC for administrative costs) No refunds for cancellation. 

Accessibility: This tour was specifically designed to engage visitors who are visually impaired, but is inclusive of visitors of various abilities. A wheelchair-accessible pedestrian gate is available at the parking lot entrance on 3rd Street between Chestnut and Market Streets. Two Visitor parking spots are available in the lot for persons with disabilities.  Elevators are located throughout the building and wheelchair-accessible restrooms and water fountains are available on each floor.

Directions: Septa buses stopping near the museum include routes 5, 9, 17, 21, 33, 38, 42, 44, 48, and 57. The Philly Phlash Downtown Loop bus stops across the street from the museum (Stop #14) at the Museum of the American Revolution.
